Food waste disposers or garbage disposal units have gained popularity across Australia, providing a clean, easy, and eco-friendly method of disposing of food scraps for homes and businesses. Read on to find out everything you need to know, including what a food waster disposer or garbage disposal unit is, what the benefits are of using one, and how they work.
What is a food waste disposer or garbage disposal unit?
A food waste disposer is a handy kitchen appliance that provides a convenient way to dispose of food waste in your home or commercial kitchen. Sitting neatly beneath the kitchen sink, it takes solid food scraps, finely grinds them up, and takes them away into the sewer system.
Most types of garbage can be disposed of this way, and with plenty of styles and sizes now available, they can fit into even the smallest spaces. Since they grind the scraps without using knives or blades, they are safe and quiet to use.
How a food waste disposer works?
All you have to do is turn on your ambient cold tap and the food waste disposer, and then feed food scraps down the flange that replaces your plughole. The food scraps land in a grinding chamber where a spinning disc mounted with impellers forces the food to the outer wall of the grinding chamber. This grinds the food into tiny particles, without the use of blades or knives.
You should keep the cold tap running for the entire time that the food waste disposer is in use, and for about 15 seconds after it has finished grinding up the food.
The tiny particles are then washed away by the water through holes in the chamber walls. The food then flows safely into your sewer system and is carried away. On average, a food waste disposer uses the same amount of water per day as flushing the toilet once.
Food waste disposers can dispose of most types of food waste, including meat, fish, small bones, eggshells, fruit and vegetable peelings, and more. However, it is important to know what to avoid putting in your food waste disposer. Generally, this includes tough or fibrous food scraps such as potato peels, as well as oil, grease, pits, and other hard objects.
The benefits of using a food waste disposer
There are plenty of reasons to use a food waste disposer. Firstly, they provide an innovative alternative to composting for those who live in apartment buildings.
Furthermore, with many people looking for ways to reduce their carbon footprints, food waste disposers offer a clever solution. Food waste is converted into renewable energy, rather than going to landfill sites, where it would produce harmful greenhouse gases. Food waste disposers reduce your household waste.
In addition, disposing of your food waste in this manner helps to keep your kitchen, and particularly the bin area, clean, and free of unpleasant odours. When left in bins, food waste can attract ants, flies, cockroaches, and other unwelcome guests. A food waste disposer prevents this from happening, whilst improving the hygiene of your kitchen and food preparation areas.
As well as providing a quick, easy, and convenient method of disposing of food waste, food waste disposers also reduce the amount of cleaning required around the kitchen bin area. Furthermore, they reduce usage of plastic bin bags, further benefitting the environment.
Once your food waste disposer is set up, using it is easy. The installation process involves several steps, however, if you have the tools and the time you may be able to install it yourself.
